Northern Cyprus

Cyprus, an Eastern Mediterranean island, lies just south of Turkey. It’s the third-largest island in the Mediterranean and is divided into two communities: the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to the north, inhabited by Turkish Cypriots, and the south (European) occupied by Greek Cypriots.

The official language in Northern Cyprus is Turkish, and the Turkish Lira is the currency. Prices are generally lower than in the Euro Zone (please note that Northern Cyprus is not a member of the European Union). There aren’t many major international business chains here, just local businesses, and the people are incredibly friendly!

Northern Cyprus is also quieter and more unspoiled compared to many other Mediterranean islands. Rich in history and culture, it boasts a diverse landscape with sea and mountains. There are three main regions: the capital, Nicosia (Lefkosa), Kyrenia (Girne), and Famagusta (Magosa).

Hikes in North Cyprus

Hikes

Let’s venture into the diverse terrain, featuring moderate mountain valleys, goat trails, and natural flower trails adorned with pine and olive trees.

The breathtaking Mediterranean Sea serves as a magnificent backdrop for these pine-scented escapades. Amidst these picturesque and stunning views, we’ll immerse ourselves in tranquility by incorporating an invigorating meditation session.

Bellapais Monastery

Explore the renowned 13th century crusader abbey, perched amidst the picturesque hills of Bellapais Village. Stroll along the charming stone-cobbled streets lined with stone houses, browse the gift and souvenir boutiques, and savour the delicious cuisine at the local restaurants.

The abbey’s remarkable architecture, adorned with stained glass windows, and its beautiful gardens, offer serene and breathtaking views, making it one of the most visited attractions in the area.

Buffavento Castle

This castle, the highest in the Kyrenia Mountain range, stands between St. Hilarion Castle to the west and Kantara Castle to the east. Perched atop a steep but gradual 600 step climb, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the forested slopes. (Note: Vertigo sufferers may find this challenging.)

If the ascent isn’t your cup of tea, you can still enjoy the magnificent views from the journey and wait in the shaded parking area, where a solitary olive tree provides respite.

Saint Hilarion Castle

The 11th century castle, reputedly the inspiration for Walt Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ stands as one of the best-preserved crusader castles. Climb to the Queen’s Window for a breathtaking panoramic view of Northern Cyprus. The peak, standing at 732 meters above sea level, offers a sense of accomplishment and empowerment, especially if you’re willing to make the trek.

Salamis

Located in Famagusta, entering the awe-inspiring Salamis Ruins is an experience like no other. Stepping back in time to the late Bronze Age, around 1100 BC, you’ll find yourself immersed in the ancient city that once held the title of Cyprus’ capital.

As you explore this world of stone and history, you’ll encounter untouched mosaics, ancient tombs, and evident signs of remarkable structures like The Gymnasium, The Roman Villa, The Byzantine Water Cistern, The Agora, The Temple of Zeus, and The Roman Baths. Climbing to the top of The Amphitheatre offers an unforgettable view, allowing you to sing or speak softly, and your voice will echo across the ruins. Close your eyes and let the acoustics transport you back to the theatre’s glory days, filled with the echoes of performances long forgotten.

Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque

The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, the largest medieval building in Famagusta, underwent a name change during the Ottoman Dynasty. Originally known as the Latin Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, it later became the Saint Sophia (Ayasofya) Mosque of Famagusta.

Currently, the mosque, located on Namik Kemal Square, boasts three front entrances. Above each entrance, you’ll notice a plinth, likely intended to hold stone statues of Biblical Saints, reminiscent of those found in Notre Dame Paris.

French architectural influences can be observed in St. Sophia in Nicosia and the Bellapais Abbey in Kyrenia.

The Karpaz Peninsula

Picturesque Karpaz, also known as the Pan Handle, boasts a wealth of beautiful golden sands and is home to the most stunning clear blue gem sapphire. The sea waters stretch for miles, making it the perfect backdrop for any occasion.

As you drive past the unspoiled areas and vast farmland, you’ll be amazed to see farmers still using traditional farming implements to this day. The freely roaming donkeys, famously known as ‘the Karpaz Donkeys,’ are also a sight to behold.

This beautiful part of the island is not only memorable but also home to some of the most charming ruralist little churches and historic sites tucked away in the hills and among the villages.

Kral Tepesi, a majestic mountain located on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Kaleburnu, boasts caves among its high peaks. These caves, evidently used by pirates to store their treasures, are currently being excavated by archaeologists, who are uncovering antiquities dating back to the Bronze Age.
